There is no single determining factor that makes a condition a, “rare disease.” In the US, diseases impacting fewer than one in every 1,500 people are considered rare while in other countries, the number is one in 2,500. Some places exclude non-life-threatening diseases from this category. In general, however, the medical community’s consensus is that a “rare disease” is one that is statistically uncommon, and ultimately, this means it is not something an EMT, first responder, or ER physician is likely to immediately recognize or consider in an emergency.
